It’s all about stamps!
People who don't know what to do with their stamp collection could donate the stamps to raise funds for charity or sell them at an auction.
IF you’ve ever wondered what to do with a stamp collection you put together or inherited, the answer may be to auction them for charity.
Aubrey Bowles, from the Pietermaritzburg Philatelic Society, said there are many reasons people want to dispose of their stamps.

Some have lost interest in collecting while others inherited the stamps from their grandparents and they don’t wish to keep them, and in some cases, people have left old collections in a back-room or garage where they have gone mouldy.
So, what is the best way to resolve these problems?
“Well, there are a couple of solutions,” says Bowles, who lives in Howick. “You could donate the stamps to raise funds for charity or sell them at an auction. Fortunately, there is still an interest in stamps.”
The Sunbird Stamp Auction attracts buyers and sellers from Pietermaritzburg, the Midlands and Durban.
They conduct a monthly stamp auction on the last Sunday of every month, and there are usually 100 or more lots up for sale.
The auctions take place at the 1st Hillcrest Scout Hall at 16 Shortlands Avenue, Hillcrest. Viewing is from 09:00, with the auction starting at 10:00 sharp.

Stamp collections are also sold to raise funds for the SPCA, the Zumat Trust and the Mission Aviation Fellowship.
The Zumat Trust has been taken over by Umthombo Youth Development Foundation, which assists young people to obtain bursaries for tertiary education in the medical field. The name has been retained as it is widely known throughout KwaZulu-Natal and the Methodist Churches.
Carol Breytenbach volunteers her time to collect, clean and sort the stamps, which have been donated by Methodist congregations, stamp clubs and the private sector throughout KZN.
These are then sent to dealers overseas and to Sunbird Auction for sale.
