A year has passed since the Pinetown community lost a legend, Brigadier Leon Matthysen, whose impact on the community and the SAPS will never be forgotten. To honour his memory, friends, family, and the community held a convoy.

A YEAR has passed since the death of Pinetown SAPS station commander Brigadier Leon Matthysen, a man described as a legend and a hero to many people.

His death shook the community as he had returned to Pinetown SAPS in 2023 and brought much joy to the community. Matthysen suffered a heart attack and died in hospital on Wednesday, May 28.

To pay tribute to the great Matthysen, friends, family, security personnel, police officers and the community recently came together in a convoy to honour him.

The convoy started from Pinetown Police Station and ended at Kloof SAPS.

Pinetown CPF chairman Justin Bosse said Mathyssen was a close friend of his and it was only right to give him this honour.

Another close friend Andreas Mathios took to Facebook and wrote:

Not a single day goes by without us thinking of you and being reminded of your presence. The space you left behind is an empty void that can never truly be filled. Leon was one of a kind, a man whose shoes no one could ever fill, and perhaps no one ever will.

Your memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew you. The laughter, the guidance, the strength, and the care you gave to others will never be forgotten. Even though time moves forward, the loss is still deeply felt by so many.

To Leon’s wife and family, please know that you are never alone. We will always be here for you through the difficult days and the quiet moments when his absence feels the heaviest. May you find comfort in knowing how loved and respected Leon was by so many people.

Leon’s life was an inspiration. The impact he made on people around him continues to live on, and his memory will forever remain part of us.
Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

Rest peacefully, Leon

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
