Nature lovers donate trees to Embo home

Philakade Care Home caters for disabled and previously abandoned people.

A TOTAL of 43 trees and shrubs were donated and planted at Philakade Care Home in Embo recently.

This was an initiative of Upper Highway resident Betsy Kee, supported by her husband, Anthony, of Everton Conservancy. It was embraced by Philakade’s staff and residents.

Buds Garden Group and the Green Friends Garden Group also joined in and donated trees and shrubs.

Green Friends Garden Group members, Patricia Avery and Frederike Macquet assisted Thobani Luthuli, Josh Maunganidze and Smart Elias to plant the trees.

The Philakade Care Home opened its doors in November 2019 as a response to the enormous need for residential care of children and adults who are wheelchair/bed-bound, those who are marginalised because they are homeless, destitute or abandoned, or those whose families are unable to care for them. Philakade offers end-of-life care for residents whose condition deteriorates and for whom curative medicine is not indicated.

The Philakade Care Home provides a patient-centred nursing-care model in a safe environment, a daily activities programme, good nutrition and rehabilitation, and support for families with an incapacitated member.

There is also a lovely coffee shop where people can enjoy a cup of coffee made by a trained barrister.

The shop is open from Tuesday to Saturday. There are no set visiting hours, and volunteers are always welcome, either on a regular or a once-off basis.

The home is always in need of donations in any form – financial, practical or in kind, or goods are appreciated.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
