Water gushes through pensioner’s yard

A 74-year-old woman from Escombe, Queensburgh, said that for years, her yard is half-submerged by water whenever it rains.

A QUEENSBURGH pensioner has been forced to feel like a prisoner in her home whenever it rains as her yard gets flooded.

With her compromised vision, Nonhlanhla Chamane said she struggles to get out of the house in Burma Road, Escombe, as her yard literally turns into a swimming pool.

“I am old, I suffer from sudden attack [sic] and high blood pressure. Most of the time, whenever I need transport to pick me up, drivers are reluctant to drive inside as my driveway is slippery – even to walk through it is a struggle.”

She said that she even has a problem getting the gate open because of the sand that is stuck on the gate rail.

“I really don’t know what to do anymore,” added Chamane with a sigh.

According to the 74-year-old, even though she started reporting the problem in 2019, it was an ongoing issue long before.

“It keeps getting worse. I have reported it so many times; the municipality is aware of this; people have come out, but till today, nothing has been done, and what is more frustrating is that no one seems to find the root of the problem. It is destroying my yard.

“Even I have no clue where it comes from as it seems to be flowing in from all sides. What’s worse is that I am a ratepayer. We pay so much for rates in this area, and this is just a violation of human rights, and this yard is becoming a danger for me.

“Should I slip and injure myself, who will pay for my hospital bill? I am not young anymore. If I injure myself, I won’t heal quickly; it will just be another burden on top of my high blood pressure and my compromised vision.”

Chamane pleaded with the City to help her get to the root of the problem and fix it.
