Rain causes havoc in Durban – paramedics advise motorists to be cautious

One person was declared dead at the scene in a single-vehicle crash on the M4 near Virginia.

ALS PARAMEDICS have sent out a warning to all motorists to adapt to the weather conditions and drive safely.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson reported that paramedics have been kept extremely busy during the night and into the morning with multiple motor vehicle accidents in and around Durban.

He said around 22:00 on Friday evening, they responded to a serious single-vehicle crash on the M4 near Virginia.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find carnage as the vehicle had somehow lost control and rolled numerous times, colliding with a light pole.

“Paramedics assessed the occupants and found the driver had, unfortunately, sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. The passenger sustained serious injuries and was stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital.”

This morning, Jamieson said they have attended to multiple crashes all across Durban.

He highlighted the normal hotspots which have kept paramedics busy.

“At least four accidents have occured [while] coming down Field’s Hill. On the M19, as well, paramedics have already attended to two collisions with injuries.”

He advised motorists to ensure that their headlights are on for visibility and that their vehicle’s tyres and wipers are in good condition.

“Also, please leave earlier to allow extra travel time,” pleaded Jamieson.
