Sip and Paint events are more than just art
Sip and Paint events, which have become popular in Durban, enjoyed by people of all ages, aim to showcase the joy and relaxation found in creative endeavors.
THE Sip and Paint culture has taken the world by storm, and Durban is no different with an event of this nature being held every other weekend.
Even private events, such as baby showers, birthday parties, fundraisers and even children’s parties, have adapted the theme but with the children sipping on milkshakes and juice, of course.

A Queensburgh artist, Maritza Diedricks, spoke to Caxton Local Media journalist Candyce Pillay about why this event has gained popularity so quickly. Approximately six years ago, Diedericks embarked on organising Sip and Paint events.
“My passion for art traces back to my childhood, where I was encouraged to explore creativity. Over time, I discovered the power of self-expression through artwork and recognised the therapeutic benefits it offers. I teach art in diverse settings, ranging from restaurants to private studios,” she said.
“While our primary venue is Highfield House in Queensburgh, we also utilise various locations, such as private residences, coffee shops, restaurants and outdoor spaces. Many of our students include adults, children and even corporate groups seeking team-building activities,” she added.
Diedericks said the phenomenon of Sip and Paint events emerged from the fusion of art and entertainment, quickly captivating people all over the world.
“Its origins lie in the simple concept of combining painting with socialising, resulting in a trend that spread rapidly as people embraced the enjoyment it offered. It’s also a therapeutic outlet for stress relief. Sip and Paint isn’t restricted to those with artistic skills – everyone is welcome,” added Diedericks.
“Through step-by-step instruction and encouragement, we help individuals to create their own masterpieces, regardless of their prior artistic experience. Our workshops show our shared love for art and people, creating an enjoyable atmosphere for all. Like our slogan says, ‘You don’t have to be crazy to do it, but it sure helps!’,” she added.
