Snake catcher kept busy with Black Mamba rescues

Nick Evans rescued three Black Mambas last week.

BLACK Mambas are on the move, and local snake catcher Nick Evans said last week, he removed three around Durban.

He said the first one was at a chicken farm in Mariannhill, a place he had been to before.

“Unfortunately, for chicken farmers, they will always have rats, no matter how clean they keep the property due to the chicken feed. And when there are rats in properties in bushy areas, there are mambas. I visit many,” explained Evans.

He said it was a very difficult catch and took a while in the heat.

From the outside, Evans said he could see it on a beam going across the corrugated iron ‘wall’.

“Inside the coup, though, I couldn’t see it. Eventually, we figured out it was between two corrugated iron sheets. “

After a few attempts, he managed to remove the mamba which had a rat-sized meal in it. Evans described this mamba as a calm one.

The second mamba was removed in Escombe, Queensburgh.

According to Evans, the homeowner was making his way out of his house via his garage. As he opened the garage door, there was the mamba! It was a close call – luckily, mambas have no interest in biting.

“It entered the garage and hid behind a pallet. The homeowner reviewed his CCTV footage and saw that the mamba was casually slithering up the road and got chased into this property by a passing car.

“Fortunately, no human, pet or snake was hurt. It was a quick and easy catch,” Evans said.

The third bad-tempered mamba was rescued in Clare Estate, hiding behind a container on the kitchen counter.
