Northdene couple bond through sport

Leigh-Anne Fisher and Terry Galloway said their love for sport has also helped them grow stronger as a couple.

FROM road running to trail running; from cycling to paddling to surfski paddling, Leigh-Anne Fisher and Terry Galloway have seemingly done it all.

The Northdene residents said their love for sport has also helped them grow stronger as a couple.

In the last few years, the duo have completed the Dusi Canoe Marathon, the Oxpecker Trail Run, the Scottburgh to Brighton paddle, the Amashova Durban Classic and various other events including weekly park runs and seasonal surfski paddling series.

“Terry always supports and motivated me to try out new sport and we are both very active. The amazing thing is that through all of this we train together, spend time together, and then survive and finish the race together. Terry actually helped me complete my first Dusi Canoe Marathon and now I’ve done three in a K2 canoe with him.

“He has been the driving force in helping me break through barriers. Being active and involved in all the sport, aside from benefitting your health, you also get mentally stronger and it becomes routine to challenge yourself in whatever you do,” Leigh-Ann said.

For Terry, this year’s Dusi Canoe Marathon marked a milestone for him – it was his 34th consecutive marathon paddle down the uMngeni and Msundizi rivers.

“I did my first Dusi Canoe Marathon at the age of 15. I grew up on the river and did a lot of white water paddling on the Umzimkulu River. I think that is what’s shaped me into the person I am today. I love challenging myself and being able to do things with a loving, supportive partner makes it all worth it,” he said.

The 49-year-old, who also has a background in mountain biking, is now involved in enduro motorbike riding. He is currently training for the Impi Hard Enduro.

The couple have also set their sights on running the Comrades Marathon together.

“We are building on that. It definitely is on the cards and something we’d love to do,” explained Leigh-Anne.

They also have a YouTube channel, @Rivergod482 (Tez and Leigh) which chronicles the life and adventures of a South African couple.
