Bowlers need new bench

Two members of the Queensburgh Bowling Club are heading up a recycling programme and explain how you can help out.

MEMBERS of the Queensburgh Bowling Club are making it easier for households to get rid of their recycling. By doing so, and in return, you’ll be helping them get a new bench for the club.

Two members, Deanne Kennedy and Bronwyn Barnard, are spearheading a collection for recyclable plastic with the numbers 2, 4 and 5 on them.

“The bench at the club is very old, possibly over 40 years old, and we are in desperate need of a new one. A number of bowling clubs in the area are doing the same, so we followed suit and decided to ask the community to collect and drop off items for us to have our own bench made for the club,” said Kennedy.

She added that the current benches are not in great condition and the new benches will uphold the image of the club.

“We often get players and spectators from outside the area, but there’s no bench for them to sit on. We also thought that en eco-bench will not only be impactful towards saving the environment but will also last for years to come,” said Kennedy.

Barnard said the old plastic garden furniture and some pot plants can also be donated but only if they have the numbers 2, 4 and 5 on them near the recycling triangle.

“Since Covid, not many donations have been coming in so we started to explore other ways of getting things done. Asking the community to collect plastic from us is one of them,” she said.

Their target is to collect 600kg of plastic to have the bench made.

The club, which was founded in 1948, is also looking for new members to join, both old and young.

Items, such as plastic bottle lids, 2L ice cream tubs, 1L yoghurt tubs, plastic lids from coffee or milo tins and old plastic furniture, can be dropped off at the club or with Angelique Crouse at the Escombe Flea Market on Fridays between 07:00 and 13:00. Remember, items must have the number 2, 4 and 5 on them. No bread tags may be dropped off.
