Varsity College in Westville celebrates democracy

The IIE's Varsity College in Westville celebrated 30 years of democracy with a talk by Constitutional Law expert Prof Karthy Govender and a video by various IIE Faculty of Law lecturers and other staff members on what democracy means to them.

IN the build-up to the upcoming national elections on May 29, and the recent Freedom Day, the IIE’s Varsity College in Westville celebrated democracy with Constitutional Law expert Prof Karthy Govender. Govender offered insight into democracy and the importance of voting.

The celebration also included a video of various IIE Faculty of Law lecturers and other staff members, expressing where they were in 1994 during the first democratic elections; what those elections and democracy meant or mean to them, and what their hopes for the future of democratic South Africa are. They also sang the South African national anthem and celebrated Freedom Day by cutting a 1.2m cake of the South African flag.

Speaking during the celebration, Prof Govender emphasised that democracy is a fragile and delicate practice which has to be nurtured.

“It cannot be taken for granted, and it is our responsibility as South Africans to ensure that we protect our democracy at all times,” she said.

Fourth-year Law student Luyanda Phakathi said days like Freedom Day and Election Day will always be a reminder of how far we’ve come as a nation. “Each year added to our democracy is a chance to acknowledge the journey it took to get to where we are. I have every intention to vote, and I’m sure people from my generation are, too. We want to make our voices count.”
