This comes after the department embarked on a nationwide prison raid. Addressing the media during the raid in the Westville prison, DSC national commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale said the raids are to curb unlawfulness in the prison facilities.

Their task team consisted of 200 members who were officials of the DCS and various specialised police units.

“The raids have been happening nationally – they happen in intervals of a week apart. As we are busy searching this region, other searches continue. We are sending a message to people out there that we continue to do this work. We have been to more than 10 cells, and we found electronic devices and stashes of dagga and cash,” he said.

Thobakgale said some cells are permitted to have TV through paperwork, though some cells on Thursday did not have the necessary paperwork.

He said investigations on how the illegal items were found in the facility will begin on Friday.

The nationwide raid comes after a video was viewed of an inmate flashing about his comfortable life at the Goodwood Correctional Centre in Cape Town. In the video, the prisoner claims that his life is comfortable in prison with free food, electricity and education.
