Wyebank women’s group reaches out
The Water Lily Women's Group engage in community development programmes and create awareness about cancer and gender abuse.
THE Wyebank Crèche was transformed to make a special day for the guests who came out in numbers to support an annual cancer drive which was held by the Water Lily Women’s Group on Saturday, August 31.
The women did not disappoint as they came dressed in pink and white outfits which was the theme for the day.
Founder of the women’s group Ivey Govender said they are a group of 25 women who aim to reach out and empower the poor and less privileged women.
“We engage in community development programmes and create awareness about cancer and gender abuse.”
Asked about why they named it Water Lily, Govender smiled and said the water lily is symbolic of rebirth because the flowers close at night and reopen in the morning.
“It represents enlightenment because a beautiful bloom emerges from the mud. Just like women, no matter what the situation is, we always find a way to rise and shine, hence the group’s motto says, ‘Each time a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for every woman’,” she said.
The group also has a cancer support group, which meet once a month at Wyebank Crèche.
The next meeting will be held on Sunday, September 15 at 12:00.
