Girl (11) killed during hijacking in Malvern

The girl, who hid underneath the car, sustained serious injuries when the hijackers drove over her while fleeing the scene.

AN 11-year-old girl, who hid underneath a car when she witnessed men demanding car keys from her mother, was killed when the hijacking suspects drove away.

According to reports, it is alleged that the complainant went to a fast-food outlet in Main Road, Malvern, with her two children – a girl and a boy – and her mother.

“She parked the car outside a food outlet, and she and her mother got [out of the vehicle while] the children remained in the vehicle. While standing at the entrance of the food outlet, a silver-coloured vehicle with bright lights drove into the parking lot.

“Four armed men got out [their vehicle], and one of them, armed with a rifle, stood at the suspects’ car while the [other] three approached the complainant at the entrance and demanded for the keys.

“The girl child in the vehicle saw what was happening and got [out of] the vehicle and hid underneath while the other child ran away. The suspects got the keys and jumped into the vehicle. The girl was run over as the suspects drove away.”

KZN police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that the Malvern Police are investigating cases of murder and carjacking after an incident in which an 11-year-old girl was run over by a vehicle which was being hijacked at a parking lot of a fast-food outlet in Malvern on Wednesday evening, September 11.

“The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention where she was declared dead on arrival,” said Ngcobo.

The vehicle, a Toyota Fortuner, was later recovered in Chesterville.
