Hillary Primary School celebrates milestone birthday

At the special assembly, learners performed a variety of acts, and a slideshow was shown, taking learners through the school over the years.

HILLARY Primary School held a special assembly on Friday (October 18) to celebrate its 135th anniversary since the school opened.

The school was opened in 1889 with DG Stainbank serving as the school’s principal.

At the special assembly, learners performed a variety of acts, and a slideshow was shown, taking learners through the school over the years.

Principal of Hillary Primary School Michael Jacob was joined by deputy principal Dirk Coetzee and head boy and head girl of the school, Lwandile Kunene and Kamran Naidoo, on stage to cut a cake to commemorate the occasion.

“This is such a special day for us to recognise the importance and history of school. In my speech, I referred to this as a special milestone, and we also had our learners, who dressed in their respective house colours, form the number 135 on our school field. Part of our school ethos is to incorporate everyone, and in our special assembly, we had learners, staff and our cleaning staff perform,” he said.

Jacob added that the school had also put up a board in the foyer that charted the history of the school, which also included the school song and crest.

There was also a board featuring the artwork of learners celebrating the 135th birthday celebrations.

The school will also unveil a plaque to celebrate the milestone at a later stage.
