Newborn baby declared safe after being abandoned in bus
Pinetown SAPS commends their own members and members of the community for ensuring the safety of a newborn who was found under a bus seat.
A NEWBORN baby was discovered by a bus driver hidden under a seat during a journey from Durban to Pinetown on Sunday, November 17.
According to the Pinetown SAPS, the mother who abandoned the infant had traveled at 10:50, and just 40 minutes later, at the last stop, the baby was rescued.

After being rushed to the hospital, the medical team confirmed the baby was born Thursday night as the umbilical cord was still intact.
“Thanks to the bus driver’s quick thinking and compassion, the baby was brought to safety. ‘D Relief’ and Sergeant ON Mbatha swiftly ensured the baby received medical attention at RK Khan Hospital, demonstrating exceptional dedication to duty. It’s inspiring to see members go above and beyond in their roles, making a real difference in our community,” said Jennifer Naidu, Pinetown Communications Officer.
Naidu said that the newborn baby is currently under observation and receiving care.

Naidu further commended the parties involved for their efforts in making sure the infant was safe.
“This remarkable rescue highlights the power of compassion, kindness and selfless service. It’s a testament to human goodness and a beacon of hope in our community. We’re grateful for heroes like the bus driver and Officer Mbatha, who embody the spirit of servitude and inspire us all,” she said.
