5 things to do along Durban’s Golden Mile
The Durban beachfront, famously known for its Golden Mile, has plenty to offer tourists and revellers who are looking for an alternative to bathing in the city’s swimming pools or dipping their toes in the ocean.
HERE are some of the activities that you can enjoy as an individual or a family along Durban’s Golden Mile:
Experience Durban on a segway
You can take in the entirety of the Golden Mile and the scenic views of Durban while cruising along on a segway which can be rented from Segway Gliding Tours. From the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium, you can segway your way down Durban’s spectacular Golden Mile or glide to uShaka Marine World, with plenty of stops for picture-perfect moments along the way. For bookings, you can visit the Segway head offices at Moses Mabhida Stadium or contact 073 836 8837 / 031 303 8455. Alternatively, you can email mms@segwaytourskzn.co.za.
Top-deck views onboard the Ricksha Bus

If finding balance on a segway is not your kind of thing, then you can always take in Durban by climbing onboard the open-roof Durban Ricksha Bus for a guided tour of the city. From the beachfront, you travel to uShaka, get a view of Emmanuel Cathedral, the Victoria Street Market, Durban City Hall, Florida Road, Moses Mabhida Stadium and Blue Lagoon, among other stops before returning to the beachfront at a cost of R100 and R51 for children 17 years old and below. Pensioners, aged 60 and above, also qualify for the discount, paying R51. There are two tours per day: 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:00. Children under five years old get free entry. Bookings and departures are from the Durban Tourism North Beach Office at No 1 KE Masinga, Bay of Plenty, North Beach.
Colourful and thrilling Rickshaw ride

If you are looking to stay a little closer to the ocean, Durban’s rickshaw men are a familiar sight on the Golden Mile. Colourfully clad in their beaded or hand-sewn costumes and impressively horned headgear, the rickshaw men pull rickshaws along the beachfront with energetic highs and lows. They rise at 05:00 seven days a week and ply their back-breaking trade until 17:00, transporting tourists, kids and the occasional local in their imaginatively decorated, human-powered carriages. They can be found stationed along the Golden Mile.
Suncoast Casino

If indoor entertainment is more of your thing, then Suncoast Casino with its ocean views will have what you are looking for. From the cinematic experience to rolling the dice at the casino or catching a live performance at The Globe Theatre, there is plenty on offer with a variety of sit-in or takeaway restaurants for refreshment. The iconic establishment also boasts a hotel and a spa.
Get Wet ‘n Wild at uShaka Marine World

Located towards the south of the Golden Mile, the hard-to-miss uShaka Marine World features Africa’s highest slide in the Wet ‘n Wild, dolphin shows and a one-of-a-kind aquarium. Thrill-seekers can have their fun sliding down the steep slide while those brave enough can swim with sharks or zip line along the park. For a more tame experience, you can immerse yourself into the deep blue sea by visiting the uShaka Shipwreck Aquarium or by taking in the dolphin show. Also on offer are Dangerous Creatures, Kids World and various shops and restaurants. For more information, contact 031 328 8000 or email: mkt@ushakamarineworld.co.za for park rates and opening times.
