Her mentor, Nirvasha Rugburthial, said Usithandile’s scholastic abilities are by far superior and she is a power-packed individual that has extraordinary potential.

“From a six-year-old girl, her Grade R teacher paid heed to this little girl’s zesty attitude towards her school work and since then has continually helped her chase after her dreams and aspirations in maintaining top class achiever. She thus has banked this once in a lifetime opportunity from sharing her life story of daily struggles she and her single mum face daily for an education in South Africa.

“Whilst her experiences growing up in an impoverished household shapes her determination to one day become a cardiothoracic surgeon, her humble beginnings have encouraged her, together with her classmates, that hard work, sacrifices and sheer diligence are the key to a successful future,” said Rugburthial.

Gillitts Primary School principal Arti Jadoo said Usithandile’s Grade R teacher has played an instrumental role in ensuring Usithandile becomes a recipient of this prestigious scholarship.

“I would like to place on record her sincerest gratitude and appreciation to Mr Brett Latimer of the Oxford Supermarket for considering the funding of the scholarship. Thank you for being a noble Samaritan and for being a part of this righteous cause.

“The staff of Gillitts Primary School have considerable hope that more of our learners can be awarded with such opportunities in the near future and would like to wish Usithandile Nzama all the success with the remaining years of her schooling career. Let the foundations built at Gillitts Primary School always be your stepping stone to greater heights! As you soar on, remember if you can dream it you will achieve it,” said Jadoo.

Usithandile said she is grateful and excited for the opportunity and is looking forward to learning and making new friends.
