Hiking Essentials: What to pack and know before you go
An avid hiker shares advice for first time hikers, explains the different levels of hiking, and what one needs to carry on the hike.
HIKING has become a popular hobby for many people, especially those who love exploring nature and keeping fit. Hiking entails walking outdoors on a trail, or off trail, for recreational purposes.
One avid hiker, Colin Chaplin, who is part of the Wednesday Hiking Group at Giba Gorge, explained that hiking is a very healthy pastime, a way to exercise at a leisurely pace, and a place to make some good (like-minded) friends.
“There is always much chatter while we are walking.”

He said that as the Wednesday Hiking Group, they hike every Wednesday from 08:00am to 12:00, mostly at Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park, occasionally at the Everton Conservancy, sometimes at the NU Driving Range at Hillcrest just past St. Hillier’s, and any other local hiking areas that they find.
Chaplin advised people to refrain from hiking on their own in secluded areas.
What to take on these hikes
Asked about what one can bring on hikes, he mentioned water and a snack (biscuits, nuts, fruit).
“Oh, and did I mention water! People must wear suitable footwear. I would also advise people to carry a small first aid pack, couple of plasters, crepe bandage, maybe a tiny bottle of Dettol, and an antiseptic ointment for just in case.”
Generally, Chaplin said hikes are distinguished on five different levels; easy, intermediate, challenging, difficult and very difficult.
He advised first time hikers to join a group to see if they will enjoy it.
“Our group (the Wednesday Hiking Group) has about six to 10 hikers each week in Giba, and we are accompanied by a Giba Security staff member.
“We had a recent incident where a young woman pulled a muscle. The staff member was able to phone through to the office and a vehicle came out and fetched her.”
Hiking levels are classified by difficulty, and can range from easy to very strenuous. Chaplin said the level of hiking that’s right for you depends on your fitness level.
Hiking level descriptions:
Easy: Suitable for family groups, including children and the elderly.
Moderate: Suitable for people with a moderate level of fitness
Strenuous: Suitable for people who are accustomed to walking rough trails and have a high level of fitness
Very strenuous: Suitable for experienced and / or very fit hikers
