Young dog handler set for national stage
Young dog handler Cayley Archibald prepares for a national competition along with her dog Aston.

GRADE eight learner at Kloof High School, Cayley Archibald, is preparing for the Kennel Union of SA (Kusa) Nationals in Cape Town in the world of Junior Handling, a competitive field where young handlers showcase their skills in working with purebred dogs.

Cayley’s journey began with inspiration from her aunt, a seasoned handler who has spent most of her life showcasing dogs. Under her guidance, Cayley started in the Child Handling class, learning the fundamentals of working with dogs in the show ring. As she grew in skill and experience, she outgrew the beginner class and stepped into the competitive world of Junior Handling (ages 12-18).
A significant part of Junior Handling is the relationship between the handler and their dog, and Cayley said she shares an unbreakable bond with Aston, her Saluki.
“The connection between us is undeniable — when Aston hears that his favorite person (me) is coming over, his tail doesn’t stop wagging. Our teamwork, trust, and mutual affection are at the heart of the success in the ring,” she said.

Cayley has already competed in numerous dog shows across South Africa. She has travelled extensively, participating in show weekends in Johannesburg and within the province.
“In 2024 I was awarded KZN Provincial Colours for Junior Handling. I exceeded the required points quota and secured first place at KZN Supreme, earning the title of KZN Junior Handler,” she said.
Now, Cayley and Aston are setting their sights on a new challenge, competing at the Kusa Nationals in Cape Town in May. This is a prestigious event, bringing together the best Junior Handlers from across the country.
“However, getting to Cape Town is no small feat, and we could use support from our hometown community to make this dream a reality,” she said.

Cayley and Aston are calling on local businesses, individuals, organisations, and anyone who believes in helping young talent thrive to support their journey to represent KZN on the national stage.
