Streak, shave or snip for CANSA at the Pavilion Shopping Centre

Highway residents can shave, spray or stencil their hair for in support of the annual CANSA Shavathon at the Pavilion Shopping Centre this weekend.

THE Pavilion Shopping Centre will be one of many malls across Durban that will host Shavathon events where the public can spray their hair in vibrant colours or the fearless and bold can shave their hair or snip off their pony tail.

The CANSA Shavathon will be taking place in the main fountain court on the Cinema Level from 09:00 to 19:00 on both Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2.

The Pavilion Shopping Centre has hosted and supported the CANSA Shavathon for more than 10 years.

“It is an opportunity for the centre to give back to the community and assist CANSA in raising funds for such an important initiative that has the potential to help those in need,” said the centre’s management.

Sustainability co-ordinator for CANSA KZN, Natasha Brown, said corporates, school sport clubs and organisations are encouraged to host a Shavathon event.

“Communities across Durban are encouraged to spray, shave or snip off their pony tails to raise much-needed funds for cancer patients,” she said.

“The hairsprays are temporary and there are some cool stencils as well. The donation to shave or spray is greatly appreciated,” she said.

The event can be a team-building activity or assisted by CANSA volunteers, depending on the size of the event. All events must be registered through the Shavathon website.

An appeal for hair donations is also made to the public. This is used to create wigs for cancer patients who suffer hair loss and damage when they undergo chemotherapy.
Some of the drugs also damage hair follicles, which is why CANSA receives human hair donations (ponytails) in order to make sufficient wigs for cancer survivors requesting them.

“These wigs are distributed, as requested, to CANSA Care Centres all over the country and given to cancer survivors who need it most. So even snipping off your pony tail at a Shavathon event would be great. Pony tails must be 25cm and longer to make a wig, however shorter lengths are welcome as these serve as filler hair,” said Brown.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
