Principal swims her 47th Midmar Mile and finishes third in her age group

Coming from a family of swimmers, Dr Barbara Bowley loves being in the water and the Midmar Mile race is an event very close to heart as she has swam it from a very young age.

FINISHING her 47th Midmar Mile with a time of 25:14, Dr Barbara Bowley placed an impressive third in her category (50-60 years).

The St Benedict School principal said she started swimming the race at the age of eight and has only missed five races.

She explained that she comes from a family of swimmers and has been a swimmer for all her life, and an event such as the Midmar Mile excites her and she always looks forward to it.

“It is such an amazing event that draws people from all over the country and overseas,” said Bowley.

“Growing up, I competed mostly in the pool, but now I prefer open water swimming.”

Bowley said she was slightly disappointed with coming in third place as she had won first place for two years in a row.

“Although I felt a bit disappointed, but I was happy with my time considering that I had a shoulder injury, but I am looking forward to going back next year,” she said with a smile.

For Bowley, the 1.6km race is not just about getting a medal or being in the top three, it is a celebration of life.

“I have seen the excitement from people after finishing the race as it is a big accomplishment for them.”

To reach top form, Bowley said she trains three times a week in a normal swimming pool and tries to swim in open water over the weekends. She also swam the Dolphin Mile for a few years, and she enjoys running.

“Life is so stressful and I do believe that exercising contributes to a healthy body, healthy mind and a healthy lifestyle.”

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
