Hillcrest couple celebrates 60 years of marriage

From raising two daughters and running a successful business, to sharing a love of sport and building their dream retirement home, their journey is a true testament to lasting love.

HILLCREST lovebirds, Robert and Jacqueline Runciman, celebrate 60 years of marriage on April 24.

The two met as teenagers. Robert played badminton with friends and arrived at Jacqui’s home to collect her sister.

He spotted Jacqui reading on the front verandah and invited her to play as well. After a few games he invited her out and bought her a ‘promise ring’ which meant they were officially dating.

Five years later, they tied the knot at St Mary’s Church in Durban. Robert worked for a tyre company in Durban and started a little side business in the basement of his parents’ home which later became his own engineering business in Jacobs.

They welcomed their eldest daughter Sharon in 1966 and two years later their second daughter Carey was born.

Sharon and Carey each have a son and daughter of their own. They also have two great grandchildren.

Jacqui is an accomplished seamstress and worked from home until her daughters were teenagers. She then found a job as a directors’ secretary, where she worked for 35 years.

Rob and Jacqui built their first house in New Germany in 1975 where they stayed for almost 20 years. They then built their second home in Hillcrest in 1998 on a golfing estate, where they are happily retired.

Over the years they shared a love of sports which included tennis, badminton and golf.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
