Hillcrest High School learner aims to inspire through modelling

Shaylize Gopal, a finalist at the Queen of South Africa pageant, held an awareness campaign to support and encourage donations for Tholuthando Children's Home in Embo.

HIGHWAY resident Shaylize Gopal walked away with two crowns at the Queen of South Africa pageant recently.

The 17-year old won the Beauty with a Purpose crown as she raised the most care packs overall across the six age groups. The care packs, which help girls to not miss school, will be donated to various schools.

Shaylize also scooped the second princess title in the Queen of South Africa Teen 2025.

The Hillcrest High School learner said she was introduced to modelling when she attended a one day holiday workshop in December 2023 at the Pavilion Shopping Centre.

“The workshop was hosted by Roberta Alessandri and I had so much fun at this course. I was offered a one year modelling course in the beginning of 2024, and I enrolled. I graduated in December 2024. Currently I’m enrolled for the advanced modelling class,” said the matric learner, adding that she has always loved fashion.

Shaylize Gopal won two crowns at the Queen of South Africa pageant.

Through her modelling journey, Shaylize said she has gained confidence.

“Modelling teaches you to love and accept yourself. I have gained valuable knowledge and life skills. I have made friends with fellow models. We fix each other’s crowns by giving each other tips and advice.”

With the motto ‘Believe you are enough’, Shaylize said she gets inspiration from her grandmother, a station commander who retired after 40 years of loyal service.

“My grandmother dedicated herself to helping and uplifting her community. She was in the frontline during the looting, floods and tornado in Tongaat. I would like to follow in her footsteps and hope to make a difference in my community.”

The passionate Shaylize also did an awareness campaign to support and encourage donations for Tholuthando Children’s Home in Embo.

Her future plans include taking part in more pageants and using the platforms available to continue her charity work.

“I hope to make a difference in my community, empower youth and give them hope. I also wish to be part of the fashion show at the Durban July next year.”

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
