Hillcrest couple celebrates 70th wedding anniversary

Ineke and Gerrit Ter Haar's 70-year marriage has stood the test of time. Despite Ineke's dementia, her love for Gerrit remains strong. Gerrit's eyes light up when talking about their journey together, and he fondly recalls meeting Ineke at church in Holland.

INEKE Ter Haar may suffer from dementia but never forgets the love of her life, Gerrit.

A day before their 70th wedding anniversary, 95-year-old Ineke was eager for one special person to see her new hairstyle, her beloved husband, Gerrit.

Married on August 23, 1955, the couple’s bond has endured the test of time. Gerrit (96) beams with pride and joy when he talks about their journey.

“It even feels longer,” he said with a warm smile.

“I did not plan this; it is unusual and I am extremely thankful that we could celebrate this day.”

Gerrit fondly recalls seeing Ineke at a church in Holland, where they both grew up.

“I was a student at the time. When I went to church and saw her, I was taken by her beauty. I only saw her, I don’t even think I heard the sermon that day,” he said with soft laughter.

The couple dated for two to three years before tying the knot.

“I was first attracted by her beauty, but I fell in love with her personality as we got to know each other better. We were both Christians, and that became a strong point of connection between us. We came from different backgrounds, but we complemented each other. My wife is beautiful, inside and out.”

In 1956, the Ter Haars moved to South Africa. Gerrit, a doctor by profession, dedicated 40 years of service at Rietvlei Hospital in the Transkei. The couple later lived in Pietermaritzburg before settling in Le Domaine, Hillcrest, three years ago.

Despite the challenges of ageing, the love and bond between them is still strong.

“I fell in love with Gerrit after getting to know him well. We got along and we’re still in love. We never had big fights.”

Advising younger couples, Gerrit said the keyword is forgiveness: “In conflict situations, one must forgive unconditionally.”

They have six children, 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
