Truck driver wellness day hosted in Westmead

The Metro Truck Stop says the day was a reminder to truck drivers about their wellness and safety.

THE Metro Truck Stop (MTS) in Westmead on Thursday hosted a Driver Wellness Day focused on Mental Wellness to raise awareness about this issue among drivers.

Various stakeholders, including the departments of transport and health, aQuellé, Old Mutual, Durban Metro Police and the eThekwini Municipality Public Safety and Emergency Services, and SAPS, among others, set up stalls where drivers could access or enquire about their services.

MTS’s Leveshen Govender said the wellness day was held in conjunction with transport month this October and is an annual event meant to highlight wellness among drivers.

“We are gathered to celebrate Driver Wellness Day, a crucial initiative that recognises the importance of our drivers’ health and well-being as drivers play a vital role in ensuring safety on our roads,” said Govender.

He added that MTS is intended to be a resting place for drivers.

“We want to remind truck drivers about their wellness and safety, which are our top priority here at Metro Truck Stop,” said Govender.

Govender said in such a demanding industry with long hours and time away from family, it is easy to neglect personal well-being as drivers work under pressure to meet deadlines, all of which tolls the physical and mental health.

“Together, we want to create a culture of wellness that benefits everyone working together to ensure our roads are safe, and our drivers return home to their loved ones healthy and happy.

“We want to thank our retailer Prashna Ramsunder and site manager Maheshree Naidoo for giving us this opportunity to host another successful health and wellness day.”
