Watch: Local art club have fun with flowers

The Hillcrest Floral Art Club is still going strong after 40 years! Founded in 1983, the club's purpose is simple: to have fun with flowers.

THE Hillcrest Floral Art Club is still flourishing after four decades in existence.

Founded in 1983 by Norma Raynor and Theo Winn, the purpose was simple: For people to have fun with flowers.

Chairperson Cherry Chapman said when the club started it was advertised in the Highway Mail where around 20 members joined.
The members met at Waterfall but the venue changed to Hillcrest Library.

“The meeting moved again to Kearsney Pavillion for quite a while and we are now based at the Hillcrest Anglican Church.”

Who can join:

Chapman said anyone who is interested and like minded in floral art and flowers may join for an annual fee,
and are welcome as guests at R50 per meeting.

“We have 45 members at present in our particular club but are part of a country and worldwide association. We meet the second Wednesday morning of every month except January.”

In their monthly meetings, the members and visitors recap past events and discuss upcoming projects.

“We enjoy a delicious tea and eats provided by members on a roster system and some socialising. There is a floral competition which only members may enter, and there is a floral demonstration by talented floral artists from the floral art fraternity.

Hennie Avellini was the overall winner of the October floral competition.



“We enjoy a fun, warm and caring environment at our meetings for all.”

The next meeting will be held on December 10 at The Holy Trinity Church, Nqutu Road, Hillcrest at 09:30.
