Pipeline leak being repaired as water supply is affected
The eThekwini Municipality says uMngeni-uThukela Water has confirmed that repair work has commenced and it is anticipated that the pipeline will be recommissioned by January 10.
IN a public notice issued by the eThekwini Municipality’s Marketing and Communications Directorate on Tuesday, January 6, residents and businesses supplied water by the Western Aqueduct were informed of reduced water flow into the City’s reservoirs due to ongoing repair work.
The municipality indicated that it is continuously engaging with uMngeni-uThukela Water “to expedite ongoing repair work and ensure prompt restoration of water supply to affected reservoirs”.
According to the public notice, 53 Pipeline had to be shut down for repairs after a leak was discovered in the last week of December.
“The 53 Pipeline supplies approximately 30 mega (million) litres of water per day from the DV Harris Waterworks to the uMlaas Road Reservoirs and onwards to eThekwini Municipality.

“The City’s bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water, has confirmed that repair work has commenced and based on their preliminary plan, it is anticipated that the pipeline will be recommissioned by 10 January 2026.
“During the repair period, the Midmar Water Works is supplying water to the uMlaas Road Reservoirs through 61 Pipeline, however there is reduced flow to eThekwini.
“In the meantime, the City’s Water Operations teams are managing the system by closing and opening certain strategic valves along the main Western Aqueduct. This is being done strategically to push water to the outer-west areas at certain times and then allow the inner-west reservoirs to refill on a rotational basis.
“The Municipality will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available,” reads the public notice.
