Increase of social grants announced

Only the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant will remain the same (R370) in the next financial year.

DURING the tabling of the 2026 Budget on Wednesday, February 25, by the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, the increase of social grants was announced.

Here is how much social grant recipients will receive once the increase comes into effect:

  • Old age grant will increase from R2 315 to R2 400
  • War veterans grant will increase from R2 335 to R2 420
  • Disability grant will increase from R2 315 to R2420
  • Foster care grant will go up from R1250 to R1295
  • Care dependency grant will increase from R2315 to R2400
  • Child support grant will increase from R560 to R580
  • The grant-in-aid will increase from R560 to R580

Only the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant will remain the same (R370) in the next financial year, with payments to continue until next year.

It was revealed during the budget speech that spending on social grants will increase from R246.6b in the 2025/26 financial year to R276.5b in the 2028/29 one.
