Durban youth empowered through compassion and mindfulness
The Ignite the Light Within programme empowered young people with tools for mindful leadership, compassion, and purposeful living.
ON Saturday, March 28, the Tzu Chi Durban Centre in Westmead came alive with purpose and inspiration as young people from across Durban gathered for a transformative programme titled Ignite the Light Within.
The event brought together high school learners and tertiary students for a day dedicated to self-discovery, compassion, and mindful leadership.
In a world where many young people face academic pressure, digital overwhelm, and social division, the programme created a safe and reflective space for participants to reconnect with their inner values and rediscover their sense of purpose.
One of the highlights of the programme was a session Led by Mona Naidoo where participants were guided through “The Inner Work,” encouraging them to quiet external noise and make decisions aligned with their highest values.
Speaker Vis Naidoo delivered a powerful talk on active compassion, emphasising the importance of empathy and unity in healing divided communities. His message resonated deeply with the audience, inspiring many to reflect on their role in building a more harmonious society.
Samkelo Mhlophe delivered an impactful session in which he shared his journey as a passionate Life Sciences teacher and influential “TikTok teacher” who uses social media to educate and positively impact learners globally.
“It is important that we are responsible when using social media and that we avoid harmful and unproductive content. Young people should create meaningful content that uplifts and educates others,” said Mhlophe.

He also inspired the audience, especially young women, with a message on independence and self-reliance. His session concluded with an engaging demonstration of a Life Sciences concept, reflecting his dynamic and impactful teaching approach.
Participants also explored the concept of redefining success, learning that true leadership is rooted not in personal gain, but in service to others.
A session on digital integrity further encouraged young people to use social media as a platform for kindness, positivity, and responsible engagement.
Beyond the talks, the programme offered interactive and experiential activities. The “Compassion Commitment” allowed participants to contribute to a collective art installation, symbolising unity and shared purpose. A mindful campus walk provided a moment of silence and reflection, helping attendees reconnect with nature and inner peace.
The event also included World Café dialogues, where small groups engaged in meaningful discussions and collaborated on practical solutions to address challenges facing their communities. These conversations fostered a sense of ownership and empowerment among the youth.
Overall, Ignite the Light Within was more than just an event, it was a movement to inspire young people to lead with compassion, integrity, and mindfulness. As the day concluded, participants left not only with new insights but with a renewed commitment to making a positive difference in their communities.
