On your mind – Freedom Day

Some are of the view that with high rates of unemployment freedom has not translated into economic freedom.

WE asked locals what freedom means to them as the country will observe and commemorate Freedom Day on April 27.

Sifiso Mhlophe from Hillcrest:
“We are grateful that we live in a free country since the 1994 elections, when we voted for freedom and a better life for all. But today many people have not realised that better life as many are poor and live under oppressive conditions. There is corruption. Police are being arrested left, right and centre. The crime rate is high and we also have an immigration crisis. So, Freedom Day does not mean much besides being free to cast a vote. But even voting means we are enriching certain people and not everyone.”

The day, which is commemorated annually, marks the first democratic elections in South Africa held on the day in 1994.

Siphesihle Zikhali from eMbo:
“We need to reclaim our country; we are tired of foreign nationals who do not honour our cultures and traditions and we are being disrespected as South Africans. We must take matters in our hands.”
