WATCH: Heartwarming tribute for Pinetown SAPS station commander

The Durban community mourns the sudden passing of Pinetown Station Commander Brigadier Leon Matthysen, who died of a heart attack on Wednesday.

IN memory of Brigadier Leon Matthysen who died on May 28, police officers, security companies, community policing forums, patrollers and residents honoured the late Pinetown SAPS station commander through a convoy.

Dozens of cars drove from Kloof through New Germany to Pinetown while some residents stood outside their homes to pay respect to Matthysen whom many looked up to for his leadership skills.

The convoy ended at Pinetown Police Station where the atmosphere was tense as members struggled to come to terms with the sudden death of their hero.

In an emotional remembrance, flowers were laid, first by the brigadier’s family followed by members of the public.

The return of Matthysen to Pinetown SAPS in 2023 brought much joy to the community as he was not new to the area.

He had previously worked as the vispol commander for nine years and was known to have worked with the members on the streets of Pinetown, even as the station commander.

He started his policing career immediately after finishing school.

He worked as a station commander at Margate, Mtubatuba, Verulam, Point, Nongoma, Sydenham, Newlands East, Isipingo, Mpumalanga KZN, Newcastle and Inanda.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
