Suspected armed robbers in e-hailing cab nabbed
Pinetown police warn that e-hailing vehicles are increasingly being used by suspects to transport drugs and firearms after four arrests.
THE police in Pinetown have noted a considerable number of incidents where suspects use vehicles registered for e-hailing in the commissioning of crimes, including the transportation of drugs.
One such incident happened on Wednesday, June 17, when members of the Pinetown SAPS were alerted by Crime Intelligence about armed robbery suspects travelling in the Pinetown area in a seven-seater vehicle.
Warrant officer Desan Pillay, the sector commander, said he and his team followed up on this information and, following a short chase, eventually stopped the vehicle on Richmond Road.
“We searched the vehicle and found one unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as drugs, about 73 capsules of heroine,” said Pillay.

Pillay added that the police have established that the firearm had been reported as stolen from the Wellington area.
The suspects, four of them, were arrested and appeared in court. Pillay said drugs and unlicensed firearms are prevalent in the Pinetown area.
“Drugs are a big scourge in Pinetown and they are fueling the crime,” said Pillay.
The police, he added, have noticed that in some instances, shops are used as fronts for the selling of drugs.
