Star College learner bags top speaker awards
Grade 10 learner Mahir Somera stood out at the recent KZN Schools Debating Championship held at Northwood Boys' High School.
STAR College learner Mahir Somera was awarded Best Speaker in two separate preliminary rounds at the KZN Schools Debating Championship.
Held at Northwood Boys’ High School recently, the championship brought together nearly 450 of KZN’s top school debaters for an intense day of competition. Representing KZN alongside some of the province’s strongest speakers, the Grade 10 learner competed as part of the team “Notting Hall”.

The tournament consisted of six preliminary rounds, where teams debated a wide range of complex motions against the best schools in the province.
After consistently strong performances, Mahir and his teammates broke into the knockout rounds, progressing through the quarter-finals and then the semi-finals before earning their place in the Senior Plate Final.
School marketing manager Sara Hayden said throughout the competition, Mahir demonstrated exceptional analytical ability, teamwork and public speaking skills.
“Special thanks goes to his debating coach team, especially Jeanette Moodley for her guidance, training and mentoring. Lara Lambert, one of the debate coaches, accompanied Mahir on this life memorable experience.”
