Major water pipeline upgrade nears completion in Westville
The City reported that it has made significant progress on Work Package 6 of the Southern Aqueduct upgrade project in Westville.
THE eThekwini Municipality announced that 82% on Work Package 6 (WP6) of the Southern Aqueduct upgrade project in Westville has been completed.
According to the City, WP6 involves laying 1.85km of new 1600mm-diameter steel pipeline connecting the Southern Aqueduct to the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works reservoir. Construction of associated cross-connection chambers and air valve infrastructure is complete.
The team is currently connecting the new pipeline to the existing ageing infrastructure, which is being progressively decommissioned.

Project Executive Siduduzo Mtshali said: “The progress on WP6 represents an important milestone in the municipality’s efforts to modernise its bulk water infrastructure. The work being undertaken in Westville is critical to strengthening the resilience of the Southern Aqueduct.
“As we connect sections of the new pipeline, we are already seeing the benefits through reduced water losses associated with ageing infrastructure. The new pipeline will also provide additional capacity and greater operational flexibility within the bulk water network.”
Mtshali explained that the upgrade addresses deterioration in the old pipeline, reducing risks of leaks, unplanned failures, and prolonged interruptions.
“Once fully completed, the multi-package Southern Aqueduct project will strengthen the bulk water network supplying approximately 1.2 million residents in the central and southern areas of eThekwini.
“The municipality continues to invest in infrastructure renewal to ensure a reliable water supply for growing communities,” said the City.
