Controversy over public budget meetings

Councillors should have raised questions at the proposed budget meetings instead of walking out of the meetings.

EDITOR – In reference to the letter in your 15 April issue and the arranged meetings for public discussion of eThekwini budget proposals for 2014/2015.

Both indicate a dictatorial attitude prompting a well known cleric to remark that it reminds him of the apartheid era.

The DA failed in non-attendance at the budget meetings. Non-attendance usually indicates acceptance. DA representatives should have asked many questions such as – Why is it necessary to arrange these meetings mid-week when high value ratepayers are working and running businesses? Why group so may regions with many diverse needs together? Why should ratepayers funds be

spent on entertainment in what should be a serious business meeting? There would be many more questions on how it is proposed to spend budget funds.

I hope all registered voters will take note of all this on 7 May when they cast their votes.
