Angling is cruel

"Where does the SPCA stand on this blood 'sport'?"

EDITOR – Knowing how sensitive the Highway Mail is to the wildlife that we share on Earth, I was dismayed to see the article and photograph published in the 2 May edition, regarding the young people with the fish that was caught at the Angling Championships recently.

Angling is the cruelest form of hunting that I know of and to get pleasure from terrifying, hurting and killing fish borders on psychopathy.

Fish experience pain as acutely as we do and I’m sure if children baited hooks with meat and tried to snare the local dogs, then drag them over the rocks and through the trees and finally suffocate them there would quite rightly be a huge outcry.

“Catch and release” is no less cruel as most fish that are released die a slow painful death from septicemia or from being unable to eat due to an injured mouth.

Where does the SPCA stand on this blood ‘sport’?
