So called ‘noisy’ pupils were just supporting their friends

Reader responds to a letter about the rumpus caused by former pupils of a Kloof school.

EDITOR – I write in response to narrow-minded Paul of Kloof regarding the so called ‘rumpus’ caused by past pupils of a very respectable school.

Dear Paul, your sad existence as a member of the community bemuses me. One day a year, for an hour, the pupils rally together to support their friends and pupils returning to school for the new year. This is a far cry from the ‘nightclub’ environment that you refer to. This has become a tradition and one that I cannot believe you have made such a meal about. Lucky for you the comrades don’t go past your house.

With regards to respect, you forget to mention the part about you returning from your house to the verge with a baseball bat and threatening to assault the kids if they did not leave. This was done in an aggressive manner and using some choice expletives. I’m not sure which school you went to that taught you that violence is the solution to problems and that those kind of actions command respect. Your generalisation that the school doesn’t teach manners and respect couldn’t be further from the truth: on the contrary, not only do they teach it, they practise it and demonstrate it widely among the community.

In parallel to your conclusion about the school and past pupils, I would have to say you must be a narrow-minded baseball bat-wielding thug. I could add a few more superlatives, but out of respect to the readers I will leave it at that. I applaud these kids and the school for creating such a strong bond among pupils, that even after matriculating they feel the need to support the pupils and the school.

Well done to all those past pupils who attended on the day: you make me proud.
