A big thank you to Hillcrest Hospital

"I would suggest, where possible, that we all try to donate blood - it will definitely save a life."

EDITOR – I would like to take the opportunity through your paper to thank a number of people who acted with speed, efficiency and empathy when my wife took seriously ill last week:

To Dr Kok at Medicross in Pinetown, who diagnosed that my wife needed a massive blood transfusion immediately and called ahead to Hillcrest Hospital to his associate, Dr Strang, who told everyone at the hospital to expect her and not to delay getting her to the surgical ward.

Later that afternoon she was rushed into ICU as her functions were closing down and needed high care and was put on a ventilator.

To Dr Rheeder, who sedated and prepared her for a stormy night and took the time to explain all that was going on to myself and my son. Blood stocks were low and I was informed that they were rushing blood from Musgrave, but if they needed more, five sisters and nurses had offered to donate theirs if needed.

To Norma, in ICU, who sat with my wife through the night and who kept us informed and amused during this stressful time.

To Julie Walters in accounts, who acted with kindness at our plight on having to arrange the finances, and, finally, to Samantha at Investec, who arranged payment from our savings within an hour and wavered any penalties from withdrawing before its maturity.

We are poorer financially but richer in spirit knowing all these good and kind people exist and work above and beyond to help in times of distress.

My wife has recovered extremely well and as an aside, I would suggest, where possible, that we all try to donate blood – it will definitely save a life.
