Proudly South African

Pinetown residents stand united against crime.

Editor – On Friday while out for my walk along Glenugie Road, I witnessed two young men grab a young woman’s handbag and sprint up a side road. She ran screaming after them. She was no match for them speed-wise, but her vocals caught the attention of several residents on that side road who came running after the criminals. One guy got in his car and gave chase. She had dropped her heavy bag of groceries on route, which two kind girls from Pinetown Girls’ High School retrieved and gave to me. Needless to say my route was instantly changed as I simply had to find the poor woman.

Well, the guys were caught and the handbag returned, but while they were all talking the criminals managed to run away again. I don’t think they were caught, but yay for the poor woman whose life was probably in her handbag. She was so happy to get her groceries back too. Being a ‘silver lining’ kind of girl, as shocked and appalled as I was to witness the crime I am in awe of how the community came to her rescue. Men, women, black, white, old, young, we are all sick of the crime and united we stand. Well done Pinetown residents. I am proud to be South African.
