#SignsMustFall in Upper Highway

Letter to the Editor - week ending 6 May 2016.

EDITOR – Recently a reader (‘Anti-Pollution Resident’) noted that there are more than 80 advertising signboards in Hillcrest.

Be warned and take note, Everton residents, as the invasion is spreading and there are now 10 permanent advertising boards infiltrating our space and creeping down Everton Road (and more in other parts of Kloof).

The eThekwini Municipality Advertising Signage By-laws state that, “Advertising signs shall be harmonious with existing areas and shall not detract from, be detrimental to or have a negative aesthetic impact on the urban design, streetscape or the character of the surrounding area.”

Have the owners of the signs obtained permission to erect the advertisements in our suburb or is it an infringement of the regulations? Surely they contravene the aesthetics guidelines? For fear that our silence should be deemed consent, I strongly object.
