EDITOR – I did an exercise to see how much water I use when I wash my hair every morning using the hand-held multi-mixer on the bath.
I put in the plug on day one and couldn’t believe how much water I used for just one wash – and I am very aware of the water situation. Day two and there was almost enough water in the bath to bathe a young child. Day three there was enough water for me to have a bath, although not a deep one. On day four there was enough water for me to use on my herb and flower garden. On day five I ‘decanted’ the water from the bath into a bucket, and voila! I had enough water for one garden and it didn’t take a rocket scientist to do this – just some logical thinking.
We all have to work towards saving and using water sparingly – it is a precious resource that must be looked after. I just hope that when the rains do finally come that municipalities, towns and city powers that be have got their ducks in a row (excuse the pun), that all leaking or aged water pipes have been identified and fixed, that reservoirs have been upgraded and/or repaired and new ones built, starting now, and that new water-saving exercises and plans have been put in place and are adhered to even when the rains do finally come.
