AT the time when South Africa changed to lockdown level 3, I read in a newspaper that it would take three weeks to clear the postal backlog and yet it still seems to be persisting.
In particular, I refer to personal mail of a booklet from the Scripture Union of SA, which was posted at the Rondebosch Post Office in Cape Town on Monday, 15 June 2020. Five weeks later and it has still not been delivered to our complex’s general post box in Waterfall. As I check the box most days, I have not seen any post in it for others in our complex for some time now, and feel there must be a greater problem.
Also, I collect post for a client of mine from her Cluster Box in Forest Hills and again there hasn’t been any post for some time. Finally, I also collect post for another client of mine from the Hillcrest Post Office boxes. She gets a great deal of post due to her business and yet there hasn’t been any mail at all for many weeks.

Nobuhle Njapha, from the South African Post Office’s communication division, responds:
Our Mail Centre operations manager has confirmed that they currently have mail for Pinetown that still needs to be processed before delivery. The age of the mail is about two weeks, due to operating with 50 per cent staff on a daily basis. Durmail (Mail Centre) also suspended operations this week to disinfect the entire mail centre and have confirmed that the mail centre will open on Friday, 24 July and will prioritise the backlog.
The Post Office would like to apologise for inconvenience caused during this period and ensures its customers that the mail has not been lost and will be delivered. Importantly, the mail is slower than normal because the Post Office has introduced steps to ensure that customers and employees remain safe.
