TO all you bleeding-hearts out there: the do-gooders. I’m talking of the cat and monkey-lovers residing in Kloof’s Krantzview and Iwula Roads. In an age of woke and cancel culture, it is forbidden to critique and rationalise, but rather to rely on pure unadulterated head-rush emotion with which to live by. As such, I resort to a rather sticky and, hopefully, thought-provoking viewpoint.
In 20 years gone past, I thoroughly enjoyed sitting on my sundeck overlooking the heart of the Kloof reserve. I would sit motionless for hours on end and observe the wildlife (mongoose, many less harmful snake species, leguaans, blue-headed lizards, a variety of species of Gheko, genets, cervals, porcupines, and terrific bird life) poking and scuttling around, invisible to the busy life of humans. I am a true nature lover and all of this right here at the end of Krantzview Road and surrounds.
However, I’ve had the misfortune of a few run-ins with my neighbours and others at public spaces who simply do not understand the dynamics at play in a healthy ecosystem, as they are severely jaded with their inappropriate militant, bleeding hearts.
They arrive and put out their cat food and water bowls in the roads, “coo” and “ahh” at the felines, they unabashedly feed the monkeys and all the while condemn you to the pits of hell when you ask them to respect the eco-system.
You are called anti-monkey and cat-haters and many unworthy names as their passionate man-hating rhetoric, logic, gives them licence to circumvent all their good intentions.
In our cul-de-sac alone, in the last year we now have attracted eight stray cats (heaven forbid when they breed!) who depend on these bowls.
I tolerate the ghastly sounding cat-fights throughout the night and we have three troops of at least 30 monkeys that rove around wreaking havoc as we have no legal means to control these pests. Our homes are plundered, our small children are robbed of food, nesting birds have their heads bitten off and nests raided and now, for many months since these new neighbours moved in, the cats have systematically destroyed a healthy eco system.
Not a single notable lizard or reptile of any kind remains, all of the birds are gone, and I mean that quite literally!
These domestic cats have devoured and chased away every eatable life form. Now we are inundated with cases of lice, ticks, fleas from monkeys (who are extremely destructive and destroy all my tender young trees and garden with their burgeoning population) and my garden stands empty. These cats try to make home on every perch and window sill. Shame on you do-gooders!
Research shows that one cat can decimate every lizard or small life form population in a 10km square area. Let the nature be, stop your nonsense please!
