Gold medals caught hook, line and sinker

The KZN team won four gold medals at the SA Light Tackle Angling champs in the Free State recently.

A GROUP of four local angling enthusiasts  reeled in four gold medals at the South African Light Tackle Angling Championships recently.

A team of U16 juniors, along with two skippers, from the Natal Light Tackle Boat Angling Association, travelled to the Bromhof Dam in the Free State to take part in the prestigious six-day event. They were given one day to practice and a further five days to compete against the other 230 anglers who took part.

“The anglers fish from a boat with a maximum line class of 4kgs. More than 34.5 tons of fish were caught during the five-day competition. As a team they took home gold and the team captain, Alexandra Beck, took second place as an individual angler. Her heaviest fish was a 15.2kg barbel and the total weight she caught during the competition was 754.68 kgs,” said Roy Beck, the team manager and skipper.

As a team they caught approximately 2.3 tons of fish and the group of four is the first U16 KZN team to take home gold at the competition.

“I would like to thank our sponsors AV Solutions, Misty Mountain Bottled Water and Kia Motors in Menlyn for making competing possible. A well done must also be given to all the children for really fishing their hearts out during the championship,” said Roy Beck.
