Kearsney team returns from iconic tennis tour

Kearsney's 1st tennis team played three matches in the UK and two matches in Spain.

KEARSNEY College’s 1st tennis team has returned from an experience of a life time, from the centre court at Wimbledon, to playing tennis indoors, on grass and clay in the United Kingdom to the red clay of Barcelona.

The boys spent two days at Wimbledon where they watched international heroes Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Roger Federer perform on centre court and also managed to see Eugenie Bouchard, Milos Rainoic, Serena Williams, Alize Cornet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga grace the grass courts.

The team played three matches in the UK, losing to Millfield 16-8 and the Sutton Tennis Academy 14-10 and beating Dulwich College 15-4.

The Spanish leg of the tour was the highlight, where they spent five full days on the clay with Spanish coaches at the Andres Gimeno Tennis Centre in Barcelona; as well as playing two matches – against the Polo Club (won 15-6) and the Egara Club (won 18-2).

Their sightseeing in Barcelona included a visit to the unfinished temple of the architect Antoni Gaudi, the beaches and some of the city’s prestigious shopping centres.

The touring team comprised Keegan Foss (captain), Dale Sandy, Benjamin Patton, Neil Lillelund, James Stromnes, Matthew Bentley, Brad Porteous, Mihir Singh, Brendan Bosman, Nic de Beer, Thomas Hart, Kyle Koenig, Luke Hawyes, Patrick McGrath, Samuel Stanton and Grant Manderson.

Kearsney tennis teams have toured overseas four times in the past 19 years – in 1995 to the United Kingdom and United States (Texas and Florida), in 1999 to the United Kingdom, Austria and Germany, in 2003 to Australia and in 2007 to England and France.
