Christine kicks her way to champs
Sports co-ordinator at Waterfall College and karate enthusiast, Christine Eriksen, will compete in the World Goju Ryu Karate Championship in 2015.
ACCOMPLISHED local karate student, Christine Eriksen, competed at the All Africa Goju Ryu Karate Championship in Johannesburg recently and won two gold medals.
She received gold medals in both the kata and fighting categories making her the RSA Goju Ryu masters karate Grand Champion for 2014. Christine was also selected to represent South Africa at the World Goju Ryu Karate Championship in New Zealand next year.
Christine is presently the sports co-ordinator at Waterfall College, where she instructs advanced fitness and helps Sensei, Ben Mare, with the karate instruction, which is a a competitive sport at the school.
Sensei Ben Mare of the Seiwakai Dojo in Hillcrest has instructed Christine for the last five years and she attributes all her success to him. She said: “Sensei Ben is very pedantic with his attention to detail. I could not have achieved this incredible achievement without his excellent tutorage.”
Jeanette van der Merwe, the principal of Waterfall College, congratulated Christine and thanked her for all she has done for the school. “Christine is an excellent role model for our pupils. Her passion and self-discipline are inspiring, and we have gained immensely from her leadership skills. She has demonstrated resilience throughout her sporting career,” she said.
