Westville’s first hockey team continues its great form
Westville Boys' High School's first hockey team beat Jeppe High School 2-0.
WESTVILLE Boys’ High School extended their winning streak with a good win in a tough game against visitors, Jeppe High School, at the weekend.
According to Cameron Mackay, the school’s first team hockey coach, Jeppe started the game with good possession. Several excellent build-ups created a number of chances but they failed to turn these into goals.
“WBHS had the first clear chance somewhat against the run of play when Mbuso Mgobozi suddenly worked himself into an open position in front of the Jeppe goal-mouth, but his reverse stick shot hit the side netting. Both teams created a couple more chances but poor finishing took them into the half goalless,” said Mackay.
WBHS started more purposefully in the second, putting pressure on the Jeppe back four. Jeppe soon settled down and found their rhythm but were let down by a yellow card in the ninth minute. The hosts used this to their advantage, winning a penalty corner which was flicked high into the net by captain, Ryan Bradfield. WBHS continued pressing their opponents, forcing another error with Chad Carney receiving a ball on top of the ‘D’ and finishing with ease to make it 2-0.
“Jeppe was back in the game with seven minutes to go when WBHS received two quick fire yellow cards, leaving them with nine players on the field. The hosts kept their composure and defended well for the last few minutes of the game to finish off 2-0 winners against the visitors from Johannesburg,” said Mackay.
Goal scorers were Ryan Bradfield and Chad Carney.
Westville will take this form into another tough week with two important fixtures against St Charles and a big game against rivals, Kearsney College, this Saturday.
The U16A team secured a 3-0 win in a commanding performance, with goals from captain Keagan de Castro, Ryan Way and Keegan Gibbon. The U14A team drew their match 2-2 result with Kili Luntu and Marcel Ganesh scoring their goals.
