Kearsney celebrates 45-23 rugby win against Northwood

The final score was 45-23 to Kearsney's 1st rugby team.

KEARSNEY College’s first rugby team hosted Northwood on Saturday in an FNB Classic Clash in cool, windless conditions after the earlier rain.

First points came from the host’s kicker, James Sutherland, when he converted a penalty early from a Northwood breakdown infringement.

Northwood fought back but Kearsney defended well for a 10-0 lead. Northwood scored from a penalty after a Kearsney breakdown infringement but Kearsney was soon back on attack for another converted try and a half-time score of 24-6 in Kearsney’s favour.

The second half started with both teams passing and attacking, with Kearsney’s Ritchie collecting the ball on the bounce and running through his second try (converted) for a 31-6 lead. Northwood played with more confidence, but conceded a try from a handling error when Brady Erlich off-loaded to flanker Luke Croshaw to dive over.

Croshaw stole a breakdown ball, which the hosts used well with good play. Captain, Van Noordwyk, made a clever decision in the fourth phase to change direction of play and put Croshaw in possession. Fullback, Lindo Nkabinde, scored under the posts and Sutherland converted.

It was an attractive match with good attacking play. The final score was 45-23 to Kearsney.
