Villagers smash opponents 48-nil

The Highway team's 1st and 2nd XV teams took on the PMB Collegians in the second round clash and came out victorious.

ON Friday evening, The Land Rover Durban Hillcrest Villagers travelled to the Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg for their second round clash against PMB Collegians.

With a slew of victories from the first match, players were forewarned not to underestimate their opponents as they were a force to be reckoned with on their home turf.

This seemed to be the case as the Villagers 2nd XV battled to get any sort of rhythm against a gutsy PMB Collegians 2nd side.

With Villagers squandering a number of opportunities throughout the match, they were able to score during crucial stages of the game to keep the home side in check.

A late surge by PMB saw them stage a comeback. Hillcrest finally hammered the nail in the coffin with an excellent try by outside back, Gareth Lovell.

The game ended with a hard fought 31-17 victory.

The Villagers centre, Jakes de Jager, and lock, Martin van Rooyen, were named as the backline and forwards man of the match, respectively.

It was a fast-paced start for the 1st XV match as the Villagers kept ball in hand and stretched the opposition across the field.

This was credited with an early try by JP Brown.

PMB Collegians tried their best to push their way back into the game with some physical work at the collision points. However, Villagers managed to score just before and after half time which took the puff out of the hosts and sealed the match off with a flurry of tries to walk away with a 48-0 victory.

The excellent combined leadership and individual performances of Henkie Groenewald and Brian Lewis were the standouts of the match.

Villagers hard-man, Brian Lewis, only recently returned from injury after a lengthy spell on the sidelines after he broke his jaw.

These players won backline and forwards man of match for the 1st XV.

The Villagers 1st and 2nd XV will be host to Durban Mets on Saturday, 3 June at the Durban Shongweni Club. The 2nd XV game will kick off at 2pm and the 1st XV game will start at 3.30pm.

The Turaco Energy Hillcrest Villagers 3rd XV will take on Westville Old boys at 7pm on Wednesday evening at the Durban Shongweni Club.
