Fikile first donned her running shoes for the Comrades Marathon in 2006 and has never looked back.

LONG distance runner, Fikile Mbuthuma will tackle her 11th Comrades Marathon this year in the hope of breaking her own record as the first KZN woman to cross the finish line.

The 36-year-old was the first woman from KZN to cross the finish line in the 89km ultra marathon between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, for the second time consecutively.

Last year she was the 15th woman overall, and completed the race in an impressive time of seven hours, 18 minutes and 41 seconds.

“Running keeps me fit and young and I have also made a lot of friends through my running. I absolutely love it,” she said.

The Hillary resident was born in Harding on the South Coast to a family of four siblings and started running in school.

“I played lots of sports but I loved running more because I was good at it,” she said.

Fikile said her mother is her number one fan and she watches all her races if they are showing on TV.

“My family is very supportive, I’m also very grateful for the push I get from my colleagues,” she said proudly.

Fikile is a member of the Nedbank Running Club KZN branch and has also been competing in the Zululand Ultra Marathon for the past six years.

“In 2013 I ran the 68km Legends Ultra Marathon and came first in the women’s category which I found a very satisfying achievement,” she explained.

This year she has one goal, to finish. “I really hope I could be in the top ten again this year,” she said.
